Why do painting bids vary so much?

When is painting season here?
Roughly late spring through early fall, when surfaces stay dry long enough to cure. Calendars fill fast. Posting in winter or early spring gets you on schedules before the rush, often at friendlier numbers.
My house is old. Does lead paint change things?
If it was built before 1978, federal lead-safe practices apply to disturbance of old paint, and legitimate painters are certified for it. Any bid on an older house should say how it handles that.
